SA Life Absolute Best Awards 2022

Our wonderful client-turn-friend, Loren Revell-Karutz, tasked us with creating a Met Gala feeling to the 2022 iteration of SALife Absolute Best Awards. It comes after a couple of years of a downturn due to COVID - understandable. The last one being a sit-down dinner. Now - sit-down dinners can be difficult to make feel, hmm, ‘wow’ - ‘popping’ - ‘a vibe’. Well, the Solstice Media team did a stellar job in turning it up in 2022 with a cocktail party-cum-awards-cum-cocktail party.

Base Camp by Illuminate Adelaide & Gluttony

These two little punters were radiated in the blue light of Electric Playground - ORBIT. The light and sound installation was composed and produced by Mapped and Motez. Base Camp was Illuminate Adelaide’s newest waymaking point in the festival - taking over Tarntanyangga / Victoria Square during the middle of the year.

Jayden Sutherland Portrait - Ouchhh Studio | Wisdom of AI Light

Jayden was Technical Director for Illuminate Adelaide in 2022, and headed up Illuminate Pavillion, that large green pop-up structure on Rundle Road. He wanted some portraits for a publication. We cycled through renaissance classics, big data graphs and squirming digital vectors - snapping various coloured and monochromatic video backgrounds. Going to see a shoulder to shoulder Ouchhh Studio’s Wisdom of AI Light the night prior to the shoot, to 4 of us on set was a whacked experience.

Penny Hospitality at InDaily & CityMag’s 40U40

This is one of Frankie’s 40U40 frames - Hugo and Lillian from Penny Hospitality. It’s the perfect blend of event-branding photography, that if Solstice Media don’t use it for next year’s promotion, I don’t know what to do with myself. You can’t mock this one up - they just fell into this pose naturally.

Blackchrome | Basketball Campaign

This is an offensive in-your-face basketball frame and I’m here for it. A little bit of ‘uhuh’ feel. A sprinkling of ‘that’s what’s up’. Long time coming collab with good football mate, Sean Nunan, now at Blackchrome. This was shot of the day, and made it also to this list. Shot on our Canon RF 16mm to get gorgeous street-style warping. Loved the feeling of this frame, and so glad that our talent didn’t tear any shoulder ligaments in the making of this frame.

And lastly…

Out of the Black | Crew Photo

Okay, this is probably my favourite photo of the year. No, not because it features me. It’s another one of Frankie’s frames. It’s of myself, Ben Adlington (of SONDR), Harry Graham and Nic Orr (both students of mine). It was post-interview and first of 5 interviews we conducted for our short doco, ‘Out of the Black’ for the Nature Film Festival - and we were outside shooting Belinda and Erwin’s home - Erwin had cracked a joke and had us all in full smiles.

It was a nice release after a very tense and emotional interview where Belinda walked us through her life and their experience with the Cudlee Creek bushfire of 2019.

I’m thrilled to have worked closely with Frankie, Ben and the rest of the fabulous crew to stand up our first independent documentary. Not only that, but we won (not one but two) our first creative awards, Best Short Film and People’s Choice.

Fuck yeah 2022, bring on this year.
