Australian Event Photographer: Australian Institute of Architects Awards 2024

The Australian Institute of Architects Awards 2024 unfolded as a glittering celebration of architectural brilliance on November 7th at the Adelaide Convention Centre. This annual gathering not only honours innovation and excellence in design but also reflects the dedication and creativity of Australia’s architectural community. From bold public spaces to refined private residences, the evening spotlighted projects that push boundaries while connecting deeply with their communities and environments.

Set against the backdrop of Adelaide's urban skyline at the Convention Centre, the awards night welcomed architects, clients, and design enthusiasts from across the country. With over 600 attendees, the energy in the room was electric, a palpable anticipation for the announcement of this year’s winners. As the team behind the lens for the evening, we at Frankie The Creative were immersed in every moment, capturing the grandeur, camaraderie, and joy of the night.

The night’s highest accolade, the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture, was awarded to Powerhouse Castle Hill by Lahznimmo Architects (NSW). This project, a modern homage to sustainability and functionality, redefines what a community-focused cultural hub can be. Lahznimmo Architects received well-deserved recognition for their creative approach to public space, blending design with community spirit.

In the residential categories, the diversity of Australian housing was on full display. Naples Street House by Edition Office (VIC) earned the Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New) for its striking design and seamless integration with its surroundings. The project exemplifies the firm’s ability to balance modern aesthetics with a strong connection to place.

Meanwhile, Six Degrees Architects (VIC) won the Frederick Romberg Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing for Ferrars & York, a project celebrated for its community-centric design approach. The design’s focus on accessibility and sustainable living spaces makes it a standout example of modern urban housing.

The awards also highlighted exceptional work in interior spaces. Burnt Earth Beach House by Wardle (VIC) received the Emil Sodersten Award for Interior Architecture, impressing the jury with its harmonious blend of textures and materials. For the small project category, North Head Viewing Platforms by CHROFI and Bangawarra (NSW) took home the Nicholas Murcutt Award for Small Project Architecture, an achievement that resonated deeply with its thoughtful design on Gai-mariagal Country.

Another highlight of the evening was the recognition of heritage projects, underscoring the importance of preserving architectural history while adapting it for modern use. The Glass House by Cracknell & Lonergan Architects (NSW) received the Lachlan Macquarie Award for Heritage, while The Porter House Hotel by Candalepas Associates (NSW) was honored with a National Award for its transformative take on a heritage building.

As photographers, we found ourselves continuously inspired by the sense of purpose behind each project. Every acceptance speech was a testament to collaboration, vision, and a deep respect for the land and its stories. From public institutions that serve diverse communities to private spaces that redefine comfort and sustainability, the event showcased the breadth and depth of Australian architecture in 2024.

The catering added another layer of excellence to the evening. Guests indulged in an array of dishes, celebrating local produce with a modern twist, perfectly paired with South Australia’s renowned wines. Every detail exuded sophistication, further elevating the evening’s celebratory mood.

As the lights dimmed and the final speeches concluded, one thing was clear: Australian architecture is thriving. The awards were not just a reflection of talent but a call to continue pushing boundaries in design, sustainability, and community impact.
